We all have a space where we work on our models, and a lot of us also have a garage to work in, and if you do models there, a bench.
That’s about it really, as long as you have room this will allow you to photograph whatever you need within the scope of a lens and if you have shelving there you can add the rest of the bits you’ll need.

A background board is a first addition, mdf or plywood from a local DIY store if affordable and a rattlecan of black gets it going, I used a base coat of yellow so that when you take a shot there is some variation on the colours, later we can look at painting a back which can be a fun thing to do as well, but how you do it is up to you, I’ve also put on a base, this one I have put a frame underneath to keep it a bit stiffer but again up to you, and this is just how I have prepared for shooting.

You’ll notice I have added a studio light, they can be purchased for a reasonable price and will be useful, you can buy other lights too, I will later but this one will fit on the ceiling and so sits out of the way.

Next I made up a bit of a frame, this is useful for holding a background up and clipping things on it and can be moved around or removed at will.

There are a number of additions including reflectors that add light to the area you want to
photograph and give life to it as we’ll cover as we go along
So I’m all set up to take photographs, the board here is 6in x 6in and are just the right size for making dioramas and are close enough to focus on a subject. For using on games 6 of theses combined can make a board just the right size for gaming and with a little planning can make a set of random boards that can be reused.
